A slight departure for the house blog to tell you that we are ENGAGED! John popped the big question on Thursday, July 31st on the 95th floor of the John Hancock Building in Chicago. The day started with a lovely walk up call at 3:30AM to get to the airport and on our 7AM flight. John was hiding my ring in his eyeglass case for fear that he might set off the security gates if he kept it in his pocket. Once air born, randomly, John suggested an in-flight cocktail at the ripe old hour of 8AM! Knowing what I know now, it was completely called for! Once in Chicago, we hopped on the public transportation system known as the "L Train" and rode into the city to meet up with John's father (who was in town for business) for lunch at their favorite spot, Portillos. We spent the rest of the day cruising around museums and taking a boat tour through the middle of the city. I remained completely oblivious to the fact the John constantly has his hand in his pocket and is varying in shades of white. We return to our fabulous historical hotel, The Whitehall Hotel, off of Michigan Avenue to get ready for dinner. We dined at a wonderful restuarant, The Signature Room, 1200 feet in the air with sweeping views of the city and lake Michigan. In-between dinner and dessert, John slipped a ring on my finger and asked me to be his wife. I gleefully responded, "YES" and immediately broke into the ugly cry ... go figure. We toasted to the occasion with my favorite bubbly drink. We had a wonderful rest of the weekend with John's family sightseeing. shopping, taking in a Cubs game and plenty of eating ..yum!
